Damon, Clooney laugh off 'sexy' snub

NEW YORK, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Matt Damon says he harbors no ill will towards Matthew McConaughey, the actor who beat him out for People magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" title.

While the "Sahara" star's photo graced the magazine's cover, Damon, who ranked lower on People's annual "sexy man" list, was pictured inside.

Asked how he felt to be a runner-up, Damon joked with reporters in New York: "Do you believe that? After all the money I put into my campaign? It's terrible. I feel like he'll be a good 'sexiest man.' I feel like he'll appreciate it. If anything should happen to him, I'll be there to step in and carry the mantle. We fought a good fight."

Former "Sexiest Man Alive" George Clooney, who can be seen Wednesday opposite Damon in the political thriller, "Syriana," added with a smirk, "I was a little hurt that Pretty Boy McConaughey now takes over, but it's a big responsibility. It's a heavy crown for him, but I think Mr. Abs himself can handle it. ... I was a little bit ticked that Matt Damon didn't get front page. He campaigned a really good campaign and we thought for sure he was going to pull it off this year."
