'Mary Poppins' takes 'Lion King' venue

NEW YORK, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Disney Theatrical Productions is bumping its Broadway hit, "The Lion King," from the New Amsterdam Theater to make way for "Mary Poppins."

"The Lion King" will move to the Minskoff next summer with "Mary Poppins" making the trek from London's Prince Edward Theatre to Broadway in October 2006, Playbill reported Friday.

The musical, based on the popular 1964 Walt Disney film, is scheduled to open in November 2006.

"The Lion King" has occupied the New Amsterdam since its 1997 debut.

"Mary Poppins" will become the third production at the restored New Amsterdam, Playbill noted. A limited run of "King David" was staged there prior to the opening of "The Lion King."
