Lifetime cancels 'Strong Medicine'

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- The longest-running original drama created for basic cable, "Strong Medicine," has been canceled by Lifetime Television.

"After 132 episodes, we felt that the show had, as all television programs eventually do, run its course, and it was time to offer viewers another option," said a Lifetime statement printed in the Hollywood Reporter Friday.

The series has averaged 2.5 million total viewers per first-run episode this season, a 10 percent rise over last year.

Steve Mosko, president of Sony Pictures Television, the show's producer, said the show -- executive produced by Whoopi Goldberg and Tammy Ader -- "changed Lifetime and the landscape of cable programming forever."

The current and final season will conclude early next year.
