Group seeks probe of review board

NEW YORK, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- A group of former National Board of Review members have asked New York Attorney General Elliot Spitzer to investigate the organization.

The complaint claims the non-profit organization founded in 1909 to "support excellence and free expression in film" is being operated as "a private club instead of a charity," Daily Variety reported Wednesday.

The complainants say the group is violating its own bylaws as well as New York state's not-for-profit requirements.

In addition, they charge one official owns a production company and gives preferential treatment to friends and family under the NBR banner.

NBR Treasurer and Legal Representative Leon Friedman told Variety the complaint is "full of factual and legal errors."

He blamed the dispute on "personal grievances" and predicted Spitzer will not find any wrongdoing in the organization.
