NBC to air competing series?

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- NBC apparently has two series in the works based on what happens backstage at a "Saturday Night Live" type show, the New York Post said Monday.

"West Wing" creator Aaron Sorkin has sold a new series to NBC that sounds a lot like a show already being developed by "Saturday Night Live" star Tina Fey, the newspaper said.

Sorkin's show is described as a one-hour drama about what goes on behind the scenes of a long-running comedy sketch show based in L.A.

Fey's show is a comedy along the same vein. It is already being cast and set to premiere sometime in 2006, the Post said.

NBC released a statement to the Post, saying: "We're proceeding with the Tina Fey comedy and are excited about it."

But, the Post said there is definite concern in the Fey camp about the Sorkin deal, which reportedly cost NBC $21 million.
