Peter Jackson to produce 'Halo' flick

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- The creative team behind the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, were named Tuesday as executive producers of the "Halo" movie.

Jackson's Weta Workshop will handle the special effects for the movie based on the popular Microsoft video game, Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox announced in a news release.

"Halo" will be shot in Wellington, New Zealand, with a target release date of summer 2007.

"As a gaming fan, I'm excited to bring 'Halo's' premise, action and settings to the screen with all the specificity and reality today's technology can provide," Jackson said in the release. "Fran and I are intrigued by the unique challenges this project offers ... I'm a huge fan of the game and look forward to helping it come alive on the cinema screen."

Alex Garland is adapting the game for the big screen.

A director is expected to be announced soon.
