Deaths hang over Dutch film festival

UTRECHT, Netherlands, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- The 25th Jubilee edition of the Netherlands Film Festival is a bittersweet affair with two key deaths casting a pall over the festivities.

The festival opened in Utrecht Sept. 28, a day after one of the most beloved Dutch film directors, Willem van de Sande Bakhuyzen, died of cancer at age 48, Daily Variety reported Sunday. The 10-day festival runs through Oct. 7.

The festival opened with the world premiere of van de Sande Bakhuyzen's "Live."

Casting a further shadow over the festivities was the absence of TV and film producer-director Theo Van Gogh, who was slain in Amsterdam shortly after last year's festival ended.
