Winfrey announces new book choice

CHICAGO, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- TV talk show host Oprah Winfrey's latest book club pick is James Frey's memoir about substance abuse, "A Million Little Pieces."

The non-fiction choice is a break from the classic novels Winfrey has advocated in the past, the New York Times noted.

"I wanted to open the door and broaden the field," Winfrey told the newspaper. "That allows me the opportunity to do what I like to do most, which is sit and talk to authors about their work. It's kind of hard to do that when they're dead."

Frey's book about his treatment for alcoholism and drug addiction was first published in 2003.

The Times noted being chosen for Oprah's Book Club typically results in sales of more than a million books.
