Manson backs off Garbage 'hiatus' quote

MELBOURNE, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Garbage singer Shirley Manson Thursday softened comments she made a day earlier that implied the U.S. rock band was breaking up.

Manson had told the Melbourne Herald Sun Wednesday that she, Butch Vig, Duke Erikson and Steve Marker had decided to take an indefinite hiatus after their Australian tour ends Oct. 1.

"We always swore if it wasn't 100 percent fun we'd stop it," she told the Herald Sun. "So that's what we've decided to do."

She backtracked Thursday, telling Australia's National Nine News, "I don't think anybody is interested in breaking up," E! Online reported.

This time, she made the break sound more like a vacation than anything else.

"We feel that this has been a really great tour and we feel that we have really muscled through and produced a great record and we just want to take some time off while things are really good between us," she said.

She said the band members are merely tired from touring and she needs time to "get my life into some sort of sense of control."
