NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- "Today Show" weatherman Al Roker was off the NBC morning program Thursday recovering from back surgery in New York.
The Daytime Emmy-winner and husband of ABC News correspondent Deborah Roberts said on his Web site he had a spinal microdiscectomy to remove pressure on his sciatic nerve, which was creating intense pain in his right leg.

"The pain medication I'm on while I write thiss (sic) precludes me from writing much more and I will blame any misspellings or bad grammar on (it)," he added.
Roker did not say when he expects to return to the air.
