George Michael buys Princess Di portrait

LONDON, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- A controversial Princess Diana portrait by artist Stella Vine has been snatched up by British pop star George Michael for about $45,000.

The painting of the late princess in an evening gown has words in the background saying: "Murdered? Pregnant? Embalmed?" hellomagazine.com reported Tuesday.

"He saw it on my Web site," Vine said. "I was inspired to paint it after reading Diana's body was embalmed, destroying any possible evidence she may have been pregnant."

Michael paid 25,000 pounds -- $44,635 -- for the artwork.

Michael was a friend of the late princess and in 1995 headlined A Concert For Hope, which she had organized to raise money for AIDS charities.

Diana died with her boyfriend in a Paris car crash two years later.
