SAN PEDRO, Calif., Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Olivia Newton-John's missing boyfriend may have committed suicide, the Sydney, Australia, Morning Herald reported Saturday.
U.S. Coast Guard investigators told the newspaper they do not believe Patrick McDermott ever left his chartered fishing boat when it docked July 1 in San Pedro, Calif.
"Nobody has positively identified Patrick McDermott walking off the boat," Coast Guard spokesman Nathan Henise said.
McDermott's personal belongings were found on the boat and his car was in the marina parking lot.
One of the fishermen aboard the Freedom told investigators he spoke with McDermott early in the trip, but he apparently disappeared sometime before the boat docked.
The Coast Guard said it still has McDermott classified as a missing person and will continue its investigation.
Newton-John, meanwhile, has hired an investigator to look for her longtime beau, the newspaper said.
