Winfrey has rights to 1998 Morrison novel

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Films has reportedly acquired Toni Morrison's 1998 novel, "Paradise," for an ABC miniseries.

The Hollywood Reporter Monday quoted sources saying Darnell Martin will write the screenplay and direct "Paradise," Morrison's first work after winning the Nobel Prize for literature in 1993.

The story is about the slayings of several women by a group of black men in 1976. In telling its tale, the story goes back 100 years and traces the roots of the troubled town where the slayings occur.

Earlier this year, Martin directed the Emmy-nominated "Oprah Winfrey Presents: Their Eyes Were Watching God," starring Halle Berry.
