McCready out of hospital after overdose

NASHVILLE, July 27 (UPI) -- The attorney for the man accused of trying to kill country star Mindy McCready says his client is getting his act together while McCready is spiraling downward.

William McKnight, 39, was charged with attempted murder in Nashville in May for attacking his then-girlfriend. He was ordered to stay away from McCready, who made the TV talk show rounds discussing domestic violence.

But despite the order, McKnight was at McCready's side when she overdosed on drugs and alcohol in Florida Friday, The Nashville Tennessean reported Wednesday.

McKnight identified himself to police as McCready's fiance and told them they had been having relationship problems. He also gave authorities a four-page suicide note allegedly written by McCready. The contents were not revealed.

McKnight's lawyer, Patrick McNally, told the Tennessean McCready's recent behavior can only help McKnight's attempted murder case.

McCready was released from the hospital Tuesday and is scheduled for arraignment Friday in Arizona on charges of hindering prosecution and unlawful use of transportation.

McNally said McKnight has gone through rehab, has a job and has been "toeing the line." McCready, meanwhile, "has appeared to be spiraling downward."
