'Charlie' takes off at U.S. box office

LOS ANGELES, July 16 (UPI) -- "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is turning out to be a sweet treat for star Johnny Depp and Warner Bros. in its first weekend in U.S. theaters.

The Web site Box Office Mojo said the latest from director Tim Burton grossed $20.5 million in its first day in release Friday -- well ahead of the No. 2 movie for the day, the new Owen Wilson-Vince Vaughn comedy "Wedding Crashers," which took in $10.5 million.

The reigning box-office champion, "Fantastic Four," began its second weekend with $6.5 million on Friday, and has now taken in more than $83 million.

"War of the Worlds" added $4.4 million to its overall gross, now at an estimated $181.5 million. "Batman Begins" took in $1.6 million Friday, to run its overall gross $178.7 million.
