John Mayer forms trio, sets U.S. tour

NEW YORK, June 29 (UPI) -- Grammy-winning singer-songwriter John Mayer has announced formation of the John Mayer Trio and a series of U.S. concert dates set for this fall.

In addition to Mayer, the trio features drummer Steve Jordan and bassist Pino Palladino. Jordan has played with Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones, and Palladino has worked with Jeff Beck and The Who.

Mayer said the trio came together while he and Jordan were preparing for a benefit concert for victims of the South Asian tsunami and Jordan suggested bringing Palladino in for the event.

"And something happened that I had hoped my entire life would happen," said Mayer, "which is that thing about how a band got together for the first time, and everyone in the room just knew there was something special."

The trio subsequently appeared at the 2005 Grammy Awards. The tour, set to launch Sept. 6 in San Francisco, includes three dates with the Rolling Stones -- one in Washington, D.C., Oct. 3, and two in Philadelphia Oct. 10 and Oct. 12.
