MINNEAPOLIS, June 21 (UPI) -- Soul Asylum founder and bassist Karl Mueller lost his yearlong battle with throat cancer and died at his Minneapolis home. He was 41.
Mueller died home last Friday from the throat cancer he had suffered since May 2004, Rollingstone.com reported.
Mueller reunited with Soul Asylum counterparts Dan Murphy and Dave Pirner last October for a Minneapolis benefit in his honor while his cancer was in remission.
The grunge rock band, which formed in 1984, found its greatest success in "Grave Dancers Union," a 1992 album that went multiplatinum largely on the strength of single "Runaway Train."
Soul Asylum had completed an album of new material -- the group's first since 1998's "Candy from a Stranger" -- before Mueller's death, the online arm of Rolling Stone magazine reported.
