Imus issues mea culpa for Cruise remarks

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y., June 7 (UPI) -- Syndicated talk radio host Don Imus apologized on air for his former sidekick's comment that actor Tom Cruise is gay.

The New York Post said Tuesday Imus' statement sounded like a formal retraction, but his WFAN-AM parent company, Infinity Broadcasting, refused to say whether Cruise or his lawyers forced the issue.

"The other day Sid (Rosenberg) said something about Tom Cruise being a homo," the Post quoted Imus as saying Monday. "Sid meant it as a joke. We know that Tom is not gay."

Rosenberg was fired from the Imus show two weeks ago for comments he made about Australian pop star Kylie Minogue's breast cancer diagnosis.

In addition to being nationally syndicated on radio, Imus' show is televised live on cable's MSNBC.
