Howard Hughes car auctioned for $750,000

AUBURN, Texas, May 23 (UPI) -- A Texas man purchased at auction a 1926 Springfield Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost once owned by billionaire and aviator Howard Hughes for $750,000.

John O'Quinn, a trial lawyer who's building a car museum in Houston to honor his late father, bought the Rolls-Royce at the Auburn Spring Motorfair during the weekend, the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Journal-Gazette reported Monday.

O'Quinn also bought some 50 other cars for about $3 million.

"I want to bring the car back to Houston because that's where (Hughes) lived when he bought it," O'Quinn said.

Auctioneer Dean Kruse said he'd been advised the car could fetch up to $2 million auctioned elsewhere, but he said he wanted to draw attention to the headquarters of Kruse International, which holds large car auctions nationwide.
