Box-office blues linger

LOS ANGELES, May 9 (UPI) -- Hollywood's 2005 box office blues continued over the weekend, when year-to-year grosses were off the for the 11th straight week, Daily Variety said Monday.

The first weekend in May has recently become a lucrative weekend for the movie business, but this weekend's box office champ -- director Ridley's Scott's "Kingdom of Heaven" -- took in just $20 million.

Box office tracker Nielsen EDI estimated the overall take for the weekend was $83 million -- which would be the worst weekend so far in a year that is already running sluggishly behind last year's numbers. It would also bring the weekend in 26 percent behind the comparable weekend in 2004, when "Van Helsing" opened to $51.7 million -- which was widely regarded at the time as a disappointing number.
