Tony Awards feature tough male competition

NEW YORK, May 4 (UPI) -- Competition for the men's categories in this year's Tony Awards, to be presented June 5 in New York, is emerging as unusually fierce.

Nominations include such male-heavy productions as "Glengarry Glen Ross," "The Pillowman" and "Twelve Angry Men," the New York Times reported Wednesday.

Among leading actors, strong contenders are deemed to include James Earl Jones ("On Golden Pond"), Denzel Washington ("Julius Caesar"), Alan Alda ("Glengarry Glen Ross"), John C. Reilly ("A Streetcar Named Desire"), and Jeff Goldblum and Billy Crudup (both from "The Pillowman").

"Broadway increasingly is luring actors who want to have a balanced creative life between television, film and the stage," said Jed Bernstein, the president of the League of American Theaters and Producers.

"And this season that lure has never been stronger. But inevitably, not everyone will get equal recognition in terms of publicity and awards."
