SALEM, Mass., April 28 (UPI) -- Officials in Salem, Mass., site of real witch trials, are deciding whether they should allow the statue of a fictional witch to be put up in a town park.
TV Land, a cable television network that specializes in reruns, has approached Salem about putting up a statute of actress Elizabeth Montgomery in her role as Samantha Stephens from the television show "Bewitched."
Salem is noted for the 17th-century trials in which 19 accused witches were hanged.
Jean Harrison, who opposes the "Bewitched" plan, told the Boston Globe: "It's insensitive to what happened in 1692. She was a fictional witch but the people who died were not witches."
The Salem Redevelopment Authority is to vote May 17 on the statue, the Boston Globe reported.
TV Land, which would pay for and maintain the statue, has put up similar monuments in several locations, including likenesses of Opie and Andy Taylor from "The Andy Griffith Show," Mary Richards from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," And Ralph Kramden from "The Honeymooners."
