Resort planned for Brando's island getaway

TETIAROA, French Polynesia, April 20 (UPI) -- A developer wants to open a $40 million resort on the French Polynesian island owned by late actor Marlon Brando.

Brando bought the 150-acre Tetiaroa in 1965 after filming "Mutiny on the Bounty" as a place "where his friends could escape the paparazzi and find some inner peace," Richard Bailey, chief executive officer of Tahiti Beachcomber, told the BBC.

The developer wants to build a $40 million resort dubbed The Brando by 2008 on the island, currently occupied only by Brando's son, Teihotu.

However, ex-business manager Jo Ann Corrales, who said she was removed as Brando's executor days before he died last July, challenged the plan.

Corrales said Brando gave a one-half acre piece of the island to singer Michael Jackson after visiting his Neverland ranch. Lawyers for the estate, however, said the offer was a token one.
