LONDON, March 30 (UPI) -- A new cultural exchange between Mexico and Britain will result in the first major show of the work of Frida Kahlo in England in more than 20 years.
In return, Mexico will receive a selection of sculptures by Henry Moore (1898-1986) at the Museo Dolores Olmedo Patino in Mexico City, opening in Junen the Tate Modern museum said Wednesday.
The Kahlo show, running at the Tate from June 9 to Oct. 8, will examine Kahlo's career with more than 70 paintings, two from the collection of pop star Madonna. It will include lesser-known works from her later years when she became influenced by Eastern religions. Among these are "Moses," a 1954 painting that synthesizes imagery and symbols from world religions.
Kahlo (1907-54) began painting in her teens after a serious traffic accident that caused her a lifetime of pain. She became a world figure as the wife of Mexican master Diego Rivera, a union celebrated by a 1931 marriage portrait included in the show, but she was not recognized as an important artist in her own right until after Rivera's death.
