Ugandan protesters to Geldof: 'Shut up'

KAMPALA, Uganda, March 22 (UPI) -- Protesters told British rocker Bob Geldof to "sober up and shut up" about his call that Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni step down, the BBC reported.

Earlier this month, Geldof called for Museveni to step down from the post Museveni has held since 1986. Geldof made the call while introducing the UK Commission for Africa to raise the continent's standard of living.

Geldof said he had lost his admiration for the president's fight against poverty and AIDS.

However, protests erupted, including one with signs that read: "Geldof sober up and shut up."

Protestors said they objected to foreign interference in Ugandan politics, the BBC reported.

Some Ugandans want their constitution changed to allow Museveni to contest presidential elections that are expected early next year.
