NEW YORK, March 17 (UPI) -- Guitar legend Les Paul will receive the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award, Songwriters Hall of Fame head Hal David said in New York Thursday.
David said Paul would be honored at the organizatio's awards dinner June 9 -- the day Paul turns 90.
Paul is credited with such recording innovations as sound-on-sound, overdubbing, reverb effects and multi-track recording. In 1952, he invented the solid-body electric guitar that bears his name and is still a favorite for rock 'n' roll players.
With the Les Paul Trio --including his late wife Mary Ford on vocals -- Paul recorded such hits as "Tennessee Waltz," "How High The Moon" and "Vaya Con Dios."
Paul joins a list of previous Sammy Cahn Award winners that includes Patti LaBelle, Dick Clark, Berry Gordy, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole and Quincy Jones.
David announced last month John Fogerty, Steve Cropper, Isaac Hayes, David Porter, Richard and Robert Sherman and Bill Withers would be inducted into the hall this year.
