Winfrey overcomes ear-piercing fear

CHICAGO, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Oprah Winfrey overcame her fears and had a plastic surgeon pierce her ears in front of a live Chicago audience to celebrate her 51st birthday.

An audience member held Winfrey's hand as plastic surgeon Dr. Emily Pollard Monday shot a diamond stud post into the ear of the talk show hostess, the New York Post reported Tuesday.

Winfrey responded, "Oh, I need a shot of tequila," as the audience cheered.

Before the procedure, Winfrey said fear kept her from getting her ears pierced before.

"So I just turned 51, and I'm feeling stronger and better than ever," she said. "This year, I wanted to give myself a special birthday present."
