ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Fans of reggae star Bob Marley have flocked to Ethiopia for a month of celebrations marking what would have been his 60th birthday.

Under the banner Africa Unite, the monthlong festival will include concerts, a film festival, seminars and a gala fundraiser, the BBC reported Tuesday.

Marley's mother, Cedella Booker, 80, kicked off the celebration with a concert. On his birthday Feb. 6, three of his children, Quincy Jones and others will honor the man who died of cancer in 1981.

Marley, a dedicated Rastafarian who believed in the importance of returning to and liberating Mother Africa, considered late Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie his spiritual leader.

It is the first time the annual celebration is being held outside of Jamaica.
