'Incredibles' sweeps Annie Awards

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- "The Incredibles" has swept this year's International Animated Film Society Awards, winning 10 Annies including Best Animated Feature.

Pixar Animation Studios' feature about a family of superheroes who save the world beat a field of nominees that included "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence," "Shrek 2" and "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie."

"The Incredibles" writer-director Brad Bird won three Annies -- for writing, directing and voicing the character of Edna Mode, who makes costumes for superheroes.

Bird told the Los Angeles Times making a feature for Pixar -- which had blockbusters with "Toy Story," "A Bug's Life," "Toy Story 2," "Monsters, Inc." and "Finding Nemo" -- was daunting.

"We felt like we were the next guys at bat, when everyone else had smacked a home run," he said.

The win mades "The Incredibles" the favorite for this year's Oscar for Best Animated Feature. In each year that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has awarded an Oscar for animated feature, the Annie winner has gone on to take the Oscar. The other Oscar nominees are "Shrek 2" and "Shark Tale."
