Geldof bemoans African responsibility

LONDON, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- British rocker Bob Geldof is getting weary of being considered an expert on African problems rather than a musician, the BBC reported Monday.

"Who's interested if the leader of Niger goes on (the news)?" he told Radio Times magazine. "It's 'get Geldof'. I'm 'Mr. Bloody Africa.'"

The Band Aid and Live Aid organizer and former Boomtown Rats singer said being a musician is his "real job" and confessed he doesn't even like Africa that much.

"I'd dearly love not to have to go there the day after tomorrow," he said. "More often than not, it bores me profoundly -- the pace of change is far too slow and Africans excuse their own complicity in exactly the same way as our politicians."

He said he and fellow global campaigner Bono of U2 feel the need to use their access to politicians, but were still anchored by music.

"Would Bono prefer to do this or be in U2? Hello?" he said.
