MPAA in new round of piracy lawsuits

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- The movie industry has filed a second round of copyright lawsuits aimed at fighting online piracy of movie content, The Hollywood Reporter said Thursday.

Major movie studios, joined by some independent film distributors, also announced new software is available to help consumers avoid problems associated with peer-to-peer software.

Dan Glickman, president and ceo of the Motion Picture Association of America, said the software -- called Parent File Scan -- can detect P2P software in computers, including potentially illegal copies of motion pictures and other copyrighted material. Glickman said the information generated by the software is accessible only to the program's user -- and is not shared with or reported to anyone else.
