LOS ANGELES, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- The estate of Jerry Garcia, the late Grateful Dead guitarist, has sued Moe's Southwest Grill for using Garcia's likeness in its marketing strategy.
Claiming the burrito chain did so in violation of federal trademark and copyright laws, Garcia's heirs seek an unspecified amount of money in damages, rollingstone.com said Friday.
With locations in twenty-seven states, Moe's Southwest Grill is a rapidly growing "fast-casual" restaurant chain. Portraits of other deceased musicians -- including Bob Marley, Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin -- hang on the walls of the music-friendly restaurants.
In the early 1990s, Ben and Jerry's began selling an ice cream flavor called Cherry Garcia. The rock star pursued legal action until Ban & Jerry's struck a licensing deal with him.
