LOS ANGELES, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- The new lawyer for Los Angeles music producer and accused killer Phil Spector has vowed to to resurrect his client's "good name."
New York defense attorney Bruce Cutler, Spector's third lawyer in the 11 months, said in a written statement Friday that Los Angeles County prosecutors were making a case against his client out of "lies and half-truths," the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.
Spector was charged 11 months ago with the murder of actress Lana Clarkson, whom he claimed has committed suicide.
Cutler criticized prosecutors for using a grand jury to indict his client rather than holding a preliminary hearing, where he could have cross-examined prosecution witnesses, and for releasing grand jury transcripts.
The transcripts said Police Officer Beatrice Rodriguez told the Los Angeles County Grand Jury she heard Spector say, "What's wrong with you guys? What are you doing? I didn't mean to shoot her. It was an accident."
Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for prosecutors, said judges, not prosecutors, ordered the transcripts released.
