Catherine Deneuve questioned by police

PARIS, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Two of France's most celebrated film stars, Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu, have reportedly been questioned about the money they allegedly received for going to parties given by a suspected swindler.

Algeria is seeking the extradition of Rafik Abdelmoumene Khalifa, who is believed to be living in London, the Independent newspaper reports. Britain has no extradition treaty with Algeria.

Khalifa allegedly induced 200,000 businesses and individuals in Algeria to invest in his financial empire, which collapsed last year.

The British newspaper, The Independent, says that Deneuve was questioned for four hours Wednesday about her relationship with Khalifa. She allegedly received 50,000 euros (about $65,000) for appearing at a 2002 launch party in Cannes for a Khalifa television station.

Neither Deneuve nor Depardieu face anything worse than embarrassment at the moment.
