Redgrave targeted for Chechen support

LONDON, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Demonstrators are targeting actress Vanessa Redgrave for her support for a Chechen exile in Britain.

The protestors are paid about $29 apiece to take part in the demonstrations by Marching Together, a group run by a former aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin that some link to the FSB, once the security arm of the KGB, the Times of London reported Sunday.

The group wants Akhmed Zakayev, who has been granted asylum in Britain, to be sent to Moscow.

At least six demonstrations have been put on by the group, one near Redgrave's London home two weeks ago. The actress said this weekend she suspects the protest and an attempt the next night to smash a door to her home may be connected.

At Trafalgar Square in October, demonstrators waved pictures of Redgrave, Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden and photos of Chechen rebels.

"This is the first time they have mentioned me publicly," said Redgrave. "Why they have raised my profile is precisely because I work with Mr. Zakayev and Russian human rights activists."

Marching Together denies involvement but one source who has attended meetings with the demonstration organizers said they openly talked about their membership of the group.
