Disney signals end to Miramax relationship

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- The Walt Disney Co. has formally acknowledged it may soon end its relationship with Miramax Films' Harvey and Bob Weinstein, Daily Variety said Tuesday.

The paper reported Disney, in its annual Securities and Exchange Commission filing, said it "does not expect business at its subsidiary Miramax to continue at the same level" after the current contract expires next Sept. 30.

The filing reportedly suggested projects already under way "may be abandoned or otherwise impaired" by a dissolution of the partnership. However, the statement also said Disney is still in negotiations with the Weinsteins "regarding the future of our business relationship."

Disney has characterized the Weinsteins at times this year as profligate spenders, but Miramax has argued it is a moneymaker for Disney.

Variety said Miramax has been on something of a winning streak, with respectable grosses for such releases as "Hero" and "Shall We Dance," and with "The Aviator" and "Finding Neverland" getting considerable awards season buzz.
