BARCELONA, Spain, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- British star Imelda Staunton has won the European Film Award for best actress for her role as a cleaning lady in "Vera Drake."
The German film "Gegen Die Wand," (Head On) was named the best European film of the year during a Saturday night ceremony in Barcelona, Spain, reported the BBC.

The best director's award went to Alejandro Amenabar for "Mar Adentro" (The Sea Inside), while its lead actor, Javier Bardem, won best actor.
Penelope Cruz got an audience award voted for by movie-goers across Europe for her performance in Italy's "Non Ti Muovere" (Don't Move).
The Critics Award went to "Trilogy -- The Weeping Meadow."
