Horvitz has won four directing Emmys -- three of them for his work on Academy Awards telecasts. This will be his ninth time calling the shots on the Oscars show.

Horvitz said he was particularly enthused that Cates had ideas for "streamlining" the telecast, which will be hosted by comedian Chris Rock.

Horvitz is currently working on the upcoming "The Kennedy Center Honors" -- his 13th time in the control room for that program. In September, he directed his 11th Emmy Awards telecast.

The Academy Awards will be presented Feb. 27, 2005, at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, in ceremonies to be televised live by ABC.
