Soap star Bailey drowns

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Soap opera star David Bailey has drowned in Los Angeles, two months after joining the cast of NBC's "Passions," TV Guide.com reported Wednesday.

Bailey, 71, was found in the pool at his apartment on Thanksgiving Day and was pronounced dead at a hospital. His death was ruled accidental.

After launching his career on the stage, Bailey spent 30 years acting in daytime television, including as Dr. Russ Matthews on "Another World," Alan Spaulding of "Guiding Light," Ben Forrest on "As the World Turns" and Teddy Malcolm on "Ryan's Hope."

Bailey's primetime credits included guest spots on "Hack" and "Kate and Allie," and he was a founding member of the Black Book Theater Company.

In September, Bailey took on the role of patriarch Alistair Crane on "Passions."
