Boycott complicates movie awards season

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Three Hollywood unions may have to find new venues for their upcoming annual awards because of labor unrest in Los Angeles, Daily Variety reported Friday.

The paper said the Producers Guild of America, the Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America West may have to move their awards ceremonies from the Century Plaza Hotel, due to a recently announced boycott of nine luxury hotels by labor organizers who are trying to get union representation for hotel employees.

The PGA is set to present its awards Jan. 22. The DGA is scheduled to hold its ceremonies Jan. 29, and the WGA West ceremonies are set for Feb. 19.

"It's likely we are going to look at other venues but the ultimate decision will be one that the board will have to make," said WGA West assistant exec director Cheryl Rhoden.

"We support our sister union and are actively seeking other venues," a PGA spokesman said.

Los Angeles hotel worker organizers have asked supporters not to stay at the affected hotels, and to avoid taking meals or holding meetings there.
