New Webber musical hits Broadway in '05

NEW YORK, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Andrew Lloyd Webber plans to open his newest musical, "The Woman in White," on Broadway a year from now, The New York Times reported Thursday.

Webber's recent shows have not done as well as his previous work. The 2000 revival of "Jesus Christ Superstar" was met with bad reviews and the success of "Bombay Dreams" in London did now follow him to Broadway.

The new musical, a mystery melodrama based on Willie Conklin's 19th-century novel, is expected to cost $10 million to $12 million. Webber hopes it returns him to his high-flying status on Broadway during the 1980s, which included the 18-year run of "Cats" and the still-playing "Phantom of the Opera."

In another announcement Wednesday, James Earl Jones is returning to Broadway after a 16-year hiatus to play opposite Leslie Uggams in a new version of Robert Thompson's "On Golden Pond," which got good reviews at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington last month.
