Kenny Chesney wins CMA's top honor

NASHVILLE, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Kenny Chesney, who has never won a Country Music Association award in the 12 years he's been nominated, has captured the industry's top entertainer prize.

Chesney ended his losing streak Tuesday at the CMA Awards in Nashville by also winning for best album for "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem," the Tennessean reported Wednesday.

A speechless and emotional Chesney took to the stage for the final win, but was cut off prematurely because the show, which aired live on CBS, was at its time limit.

"It kind of sucks they wouldn't let me talk. I've been doing this for a long time," Chesney said.

Tim McGraw won for top single and top song for "Live Like You Were Dying." a tune the entertainer first heard when his father, baseball star Tug McGraw, was dying.

Martina McBride won female vocalist for a fourth time in her career.

The relatively new Keith Urban, in a surprise win, was named top male vocalist over a category of veterans.

"Thank you so much. Oh my Lord, I thought I was just rounding out the category," he said, wiping away tears.
