Rhames to play 'Kojak'

NEW YORK, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- The USA Network has signed Ving Rhames to star in a series based on the 1970's police show, "Kojak," the New York Daily News reported Wednesday.

The network wrapped production this summer on a two-hour movie version of the show, and now the film will serve as a pilot for the 13-episode series set to premiere in March.

"In the hands of the great Ving Rhames, this is definitely not your father's Kojak," USA and Sci Fi Channel President Bonnie Hammer said.

Rhames plays Lt. Theo Kojak, a role originated by Telly Savalas, and will serve as the series' executive producer. Supporting roles are still being cast.
