Gellar happy to be scream queen

NEW YORK, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- TV icon Sarah Michelle Gellar says she is drawn to the horror genre because it offers actresses the chance to play unique heroines.

Gellar, who portrayed the title character on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" for seven years, can now be seen as a student trying to escape a terrifying curse in "The Grudge," a remake of the Japanese thriller, "Ju-on."

"Being on 'Buffy' really spoiled me because it's so rare to have a female protagonist like that -- someone who drives the story," she said when asked what appealed to her about her "Grudge" character. "Women drive television, but they still have a long way to go in feature films. Women can't open a comedy like Jim Carrey can. Women can't open an action movie like Tom Cruise can. This genre, thriller, anything like that, women seem to be able to really shine."

Gellar then noted Halle Berry and Charlize Theron followed up their Oscar wins with horror or sci-fi flicks.

"I think it says something about the actresses and the women in the audience," she added. "Just to be the wife or the girlfriend in a movie, I think I'd be so bored, that I'd go crazy."
