"Gil Cates is a modern renaissance man," said ASC Vice President Owen Roizman, who heads the awards committee. "He has produced and directed many memorable movies, television films and stage plays. Gil was also a forward-thinking president of the Directors Guild of America and a visionary educator who inspired and enabled countless young filmmakers to follow their dreams."

Cates -- who was recently announced as the producer of the upcoming Academy Awards telecast -- will receive the ASC award Feb. 20 at the group's 19th annual ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards ceremonies in Los Angeles.
