LOS ANGELES, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- The American Society of Cinematographers has selected filmmaker Gilbert Cates to receive its Board of Governors Award, The Hollywood Reporter said Wednesday.
The award is presented each year to recognize someone who has made significant and enduring contributions to advancing the art of filmmaking.
"Gil Cates is a modern renaissance man," said ASC Vice President Owen Roizman, who heads the awards committee. "He has produced and directed many memorable movies, television films and stage plays. Gil was also a forward-thinking president of the Directors Guild of America and a visionary educator who inspired and enabled countless young filmmakers to follow their dreams."
Cates -- who was recently announced as the producer of the upcoming Academy Awards telecast -- will receive the ASC award Feb. 20 at the group's 19th annual ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards ceremonies in Los Angeles.
