LOS ANGELES, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Actor Ricky Jay, con man Eddie Sawyer on "Deadwood," has left the HBO frontier series, reportedly due to an argument with executive producer David Milch.

Jay, who also contributed to the 1876-era western as a writer, will not return for the second season, New York Daily News reported Monday.

HBO officials denied Jay left because of problems with Milch.

"We tried to get Ricky Jay to come back to resolve the storyline in the first episode of the second season, and he declined," an unidentified spokesperson said in a prepared statement.
