Pittsburgh orchestra hires three leaders

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, in an unprecedented move, hired three musical leaders to replace its one outgoing music director.

Andrew Davis has been appointed PSO artistic adviser, Yan Pascal Tortelier will be principal guest conductor and Marek Janowski will serve as guest conductor in an endowed chair, replacing the spot vacated at the end of last season by Mariss Jansons, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Wednesday.

Each of the conductors signed a three-year agreement that begins next season.

"The moniker music director has expectations that one human being cannot possibly fulfill. This is the perfect solution," said Andres Cardenes, PSO concertmaster.

"It seems in the 21st century, with the demands on conductors and on orchestras to form relationships with the community, raise money and fill the seats, that there are a lot of challenges for the leadership of the orchestra. We hope that having several people at the helm will give us more flexibility and the potential for more creativity and connections with Pittsburgh," said violist Paul Silver, a member of the committee.
