Animal pelts, prints get fashion exhibit

NEW YORK, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- The splashy annual show mounted by the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum will have animal pelts and prints as its theme this year.

Harold Holzer, a spokesman for the musem, said Thursday the show, opening Dec. 7, will be titled "Wild: Fashioned Untamed" and will feature more than 100 costumes and accessories examining "humankind's obsession with animalism as expressed through clothing." It will also be a step ahead of animal right's protestors by including fake furs and anti-fur materials from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and other rights groups.

The show represents another example of commercial sponsorship of Costume Institute shows, a practice that has been criticized in the past. The sponsor for the furs show will be Italian designer Roberto Cavalli who makes a signature of striped and spotted animal prints and exotic pelt collages.

Displays will range from Renaissance paintings illustrating the wearing of furs to contemporary fashion designs by Alexander McQueen and Yohji Yamamoto.
