Kristofferson moved to Nashville in 1965 to become a songwriter, a career that took off in 1969 when Roger Miller recorded "Me and Bobby McGee" and Ray Price recorded "For The Good Times" in 1970, with the songs topping both the country and pop charts.

As a recording artist, Kristofferson's first hit occurred in 1971 with "Loving Her Was Easier (Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again)."

More than 450 artists recorded Kristofferson's songs through the years.

Kristofferson, who parlayed his music career into an acting career that includes more than 50 films, will appear in three movies this year: "Blade: Trinity," "Silver City" and "The Wendell Baker Story."
